What is run rate in cricket?
Run rate is the average number of runs a team scores per over. It's the quickest way to read how an innings is going: a rising run rate means the batting side is accelerating, while a falling one shows the bowlers are on top. It's usually written as runs per over — for example, a run rate of 6.00 means six runs an over.
How to calculate run rate
The formula is simple: run rate = total runs ÷ total overs faced. The only catch is that cricket overs are counted in six-ball sets, so part-overs need converting: 3 balls is half an over, or 0.5 in decimal. This calculator handles that for you with a separate balls field.

Run rate calculator example
A team has scored 90 runs from 20 overs. Their run rate is 90 ÷ 20 = 4.50 runs per over. In a 50-over innings, keeping that pace would project a final score of 4.50 × 50 = 225. Enter the same numbers above to see it update instantly, including part-overs.
Projected score explained
The projected score assumes the batting side carries on at its current run rate for the whole innings: projected score = run rate × total overs. It's a useful benchmark during a match, but it's an estimate rather than a forecast — losing wickets, changing tactics and death-overs hitting all move the real total. When a side is chasing, compare the run rate against the required run rate to see if they're ahead of the game.
