Overs, balls and the scoreboard
An over is six legal balls. On the scoreboard, part-overs are shown as the over number, a dot, then the number of balls bowled in the current over — so 12.1 through 12.5 count up the balls, and 13.0 is the next completed over. That dotted figure isn't a decimal: 12.3 overs is 12 and a half, not 12.3.
How to convert overs
- Balls to overs: divide by six — the whole number is overs, the remainder is balls. 75 ÷ 6 = 12 remainder 3, so 12.3.
- Overs to balls: multiply overs by six and add the balls. 12 × 6 + 3 = 75.
- To decimal: add the balls as sixths — 12 + 3⁄6 = 12.5 — which is what run-rate and economy formulas use.
